the mini mart

The other day, I was standing by some friends and said, " I have to run to the mini mart to get some ice." They both looked at me and said.... "what is a mini mart?" I started to laugh and said, "you know, the gas station down the street?" They had no idea what I was talking about. It made me laugh and I realized that what is said in the Northwest differs from the Midwest.... for instance, we call it a barbecue..... you know, when you cook hamburgers and hot dogs outside. People here call it grilling out. It is funny to think of the differences.. can you think of any more?

Kristy, that is so funny! I was at a "barbeque" yesterday in Seattle and I asked if there was anymore pasta salad, but I drew out the "a" in salad, and someone said are you from Chicago b/c you just said salad like they do there. It's funny how we say things like we did where we grew up. I have heard the mini mart phrase here and wondered what it meant too! :)

while at CBC I used to get made fun of for the way I said "dolls" because it sounded more like "dalls." Also, people from Chicago measure everything in minutes. For example: How far is it to the city? 2o minutes. Everyone else would answer with miles.

This made me laugh because I can't even count how many times I've had the barbecue discussion with someone in the Mathews family :)
Jesse calls it a "stocking cap" and I call it a "toboggan" Also, Jesse calls it a "minute mart."
